Introduction

The Berrueco Castle, located in the picturesque homonymous village that is part of Torredelcampo, stands as a prominent historical monument in the province of Jaén.

Strategically situated between the towns of Torredelcampo and Fuerte del Rey, this rural castle has played a crucial role throughout the region"s history.

Its main function over the centuries was to oversee and control the strategic access points connecting several significant settlements in the area, including Jaén, Martos, Arjona, and Andújar. This strategic position made it a key fortress for territorial surveillance and defense during the medieval era, serving as a fundamental bastion in ensuring the region"s security and protection.

Throughout this article, we will delve into the history and significance of the imposing Berrueco Castle within the context of the province of Jaén.

History

Berrueco Castle, with a rich history dating back to ancient times, has witnessed various periods of occupation spanning from the Iberian era to the Roman and Visigothic periods.

Archaeological remnants discovered at this site reveal a continuous occupation over time, with a significant presence of a large Roman settlement that extended across the San Antón hill and its slopes.

However, the documented history of Berrueco Castle truly comes to life after its conquest by Fernando III in 1243. At that point, Christians carried out a series of renovations that transformed the fortress into what we can appreciate today.

One of the most notable episodes in the castle"s history took place in the second half of the 15th century during the conflicts related to the Castilian War of Succession.

During this period, Maestre Don Pedro Girón, the leader of the rebel faction opposing King Enrique IV, expressed interest in seizing Berrueco Castle and reportedly planned to use it as part of a marriage pact to wed the future Queen Isabella of Castile.

However, before Pedro Girón could execute his plan, his death altered the course of events. The troops of Condestable Iranzo recaptured Berrueco Castle, reintegrating it into the territory of the Alfoz of Jaén.

This historical episode exemplifies the strategic importance of fortresses in the region and the intense struggles for control during that period.

Berrueco Castle has borne witness to countless events throughout its history and remains a tangible testament to a tumultuous past that enriches the heritage of the province of Jaén.

Castle

Cascante Castle, also known as Berrueco Castle, stands out for its rich and diverse history, which is evident in its architecture and design.

Its origins trace back to the Islamic period, approximately in the 12th century, although significant reforms and modifications took place during the Christian era, particularly from the 13th century onward.

During the Christian renovations, there was a significant strengthening of the castle"s defenses, including the addition of battlements and arrow slits, as well as a restructuring of the interior space.

From an architectural perspective, Cascante Castle is characterized by its primary construction in regular masonry, plastered with gypsum and mortar.

Its layout takes on an elongated rectangular shape with a slight inclination towards the east, in harmony with the limestone rocky morphology on which it sits. The castle comprises two clearly distinct sectors:

Upper Enclosure: Located in the southern part, this sector features a flat surface that once housed the keep and the parade ground. In this upper enclosure, three towers in the corners stand out, two of which reinforce the enclosing wall.

The western tower, with a square plan and a solid base structure, houses a chamber covered by a half-barrel vault. It is presumed that this tower played a central role in the fortress.

The other two towers have a circular plan, one with two superimposed rooms and the other with a single chamber. Both are covered with brick half-dome vaults and feature small windows to allow light in.

This sector also incorporates an albarrana tower, connected by a bridge to the square tower.

Lower Enclosure: In the northern part of the castle lies this area with rugged and rocky topography.

It is surrounded by a well-preserved wall, characterized by its brittle and angular form. The nature of the terrain made any enemy assault attempts challenging, so defensive towers were not needed in this area.

In the northwest corner, remnants of an impressive coracha are preserved, which served as a flanking device on that flank and acted as a buttress for the earthwork where the main entrance of the fortress was located.

Just below this entrance, there is a meticulously constructed dry moat that facilitated access to the castle through a drawbridge.

The walls also display intact sections of the parapeted wall walk and numerous arrow slits.

As a whole, Cascante Castle represents a fascinating example of military architecture that has evolved throughout history and testifies to the strategic importance of the region in which it stands.

This historic monument stands as a living witness to a rich and varied past that enriches the heritage of the province of Jaén.
