Iznatoraf fortified city

Introduction

Iznatoraf is located on top of the plain of a hill, northeast of La Loma de Úbeda.

The wall

Iznatoraf once had eleven turrets and nine small doors built with irregular masonry and mortar. They all protected the entrances to the medieval town since they are masked by the other widows and façades.

Historical Data

The origins of Iznatoraf date back to 3000 BC, when a few farmers came from the rivers Guadalquivir and Guadalimar meadows and founded one of the highest (1036 metres) and safest towns of the area.

During the Caliphate period, the town was surrounded by walls. Throughout the years, theses walls were no longer required for defence and they therefore became used as material to build houses.

Curiosities

In the 18th century, a statesman called Marqués de la Ensenada referred to this town as “Very noble, loyal, old town of Iznatoraf, guardian and protector of the Adelantamiento de Cazorla”.
