History of the Castle of Sabiote

Muslim era

Sabiyut, as the Arabs called Sabiote, had a fortification since the 7th century, built on an oppidum of Ibero-Roman origin.

A end of the 9th century and beginning of the 10th, andhe old shelter was reinforcedwhen themulattoes  they rose up against the Cordoba Emirate.

In the Almoravid era, the walled enclosure was enlarged with the aim of facing the advance of the Christian troops.according to the stories, the refuge resisted the Castilian attackmanaged by Alfonso VII against cities like Baeza, Úbeda and Andújar. Shortly after, the Christian victory took place inLas Navas de Tolosa andAlfonso VIII razed the Muslim castle of Sabiote, of which hardly any remains were left.

 Regain

After Baeza fell into the hands ofFerdinand III the Saint, he took Sabiote as part of an operation carried outbetween 1227 and 1229  destined to isolate the Muslim nucleus present in Úbeda. This city was isolated after the taking of Baeza, Sabiote and Jódar by Castilla. The only existing contact with Muslim land was through the Guadiana Menor basin. The Christians realized that as soon as they controlled the strategic route of the river, the fall of Úbeda would be inevitable.

the holy kingperformed beneficial actions for Sabiote. He took carried out its repopulation, granted the Fuero de Cuenca, repaired the castle in ruins and reinforced itlifting up a walled enclosure. In the year 1257, Alfonso X founded the Commandery of Calatrava de Sabiote.

Despite the repairs carried out in the castle, At the beginning of the 14th century, it was in such poor condition that King Ferdinand IV decided to give up the income from Sabiote"s crops to allocate it to repairing the castle and its surroundings.

Century XVI

The great reforms that the construction needed were carried outout between the years 1533 and 1535, shortly before the town became the property of the lord of the Cobos.

To carry out the reform of suchdimensions, the wardenof the castle and the town, Frey Juan de la Tovilla, obtained around one hundred thousand maravedis. The works carried out expanded the urban framework of Sabiote, reconsidered the defensive system and built gates such as Los Santos, San Bartolomé and Téjar with the aim ofcontrol access to the villa.

The Commandery of Sabiote lasted until July 10, 1537. On this date, Carlos V, pressured by the debts derived from the imperial wars and relying on the bulls of Popes Clement VI and Paul II, sold Sabiote to theOrder of Calatrava for 18 million maravedis.

Napoleonic Spain

During the occupation of the territory by Napoleonic troops, the castle was looted and blown up. That is why in hisinterior only the vestiges of what was once an outstanding work of art remain.

20th century and Present

On June 23, 1931, the castle of Sabiote was named a Historic-Artistic Monument

In thepresent, the Sabiote town hall is in charge of its conservation and restoration. It should be noted that the castle is awaiting a comprehensive reconstruction project to restore its original appearance.

Sabiote"s castle

This impressive castle, built on an asymmetrical base, occupies a large area. It has three angled towers and a fourth tower located on an advanced wall. It is little whatis conserved from the interior palatial structure, the which had a large hall.

From a defensive perspective, the castle of Sabiote shows a type of fortification that follows the defensive schemes of the 17th century, such asexample heemployment ofpentagonal towers. On the other hand, there are also aesthetic refinements such as the frieze of the entablature or the classicism of the doorway, where the shields of Señor de los Cobos and Doña María, its promoters, are shown.

Exterior

On the outside of the castle, the contrast of the solidity and height of the smooth ashlar walls crowned by the parapet and the embrasures can be seen. These componentsthey give a note of revival elegance that contrasts with the military character of the fortress.

The access door originally had a drawbridge. In the upper part of said door is located inn It isscindO, besides to be adorned with plateresque ornamental motifs, refined figures in relief and ostentatious heraldry.

Patio

The inner courtyard, although currently disappeared, had a wide shapetriangular, and had of double galleries on its sides

Doors

The walled enclosure of Sabiote originally had sixdoors. Near the old Puerta de la Villa, currently missing, there are still paintings and towers with semicircular masonry bases. In the area of the Puerta del Tejar or Pilarillo there is another fragment of the fence from the 13th century, extensively repaired.

Curiosities of the Castle of Úbeda

ANDhe historian H. Keniston believes that the construction of the Sabiote castle was due to the eventual threat of an alliance between the Turks and the French to attack Spain. This fear caused the imperial permission to build stately castles.

On the other hand, this version does not have thesupport of slav Galán, who thinks they arescarce the chances that the eventual threat of an outside attack would lead to building a fortress located so far awayfrom costa.
